Hatchie - The Rhythm
All the right '90s influences in one track.
New Candys - Begin Again
This one is easily among my favorite and most listened songs of 2021. Dark and moody, with meandering guitars and hazy vocals... I was hooked at first listen. Great video too (and that's quite uncommon nowadays).
'Found' by Brothertiger is the perfect soundtrack to a late night drive along the ocean in the summer of 1987. A red Lamborghini Countach or a white Testarossa... with pop-up headlights glowing in the dark.
New Order - Vicious Streak
Alvvays are among my favorite bands from the last decade: they embody the lightheartedness of better days; their songs feel like a reminiscence of those carefree summer afternoons from the early ’90s.
Their biggest hit so far is Archie, Marry Me, an addictive indie-poppy tune built on a simple chord progression released in 2013:
Today I came across My Forgotten Favorite, a relatively unknown track released by a relatively unknown American band called Velocity Girl in 1991: the similarity – both in mood and vocal rendition – is striking.
And if you read the Wikipedia page about Velocity Girl, you find out that the guitarist’s first name was… yes, you got it right: Archie.
London Grammar - Missing
Still one of the best pop songs ever written after 36 years. These guys have aged a lot but the song hasn't!
Deserta - Hide
Hypnotic symphony of synths and guitars from the semi-unknown shoegaze/darkwave world.
Drop Nineteens - Kick the Tragedy
"Two chords poetry" is the best description ever for this track. An essential shoegaze anthem from a long-forgotten band that you've probably never heard of.
